Decreasing Transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C Through Syringe Purchase or Exchange ProgramContra Costa Public Health Department was the first program in the State to become qualified to participate in SB 1159 Disease Prevention Demonstration Project to aid in drug treatment and testing and to decrease transmission of HIV and hepatitis C. This State Bill allows an individual to purchase up to ten syringes without a prescription through any pharmacy that has registered with its local health department. A large number of pharmacies do participate. Call the Contra Costa AIDS Program at 925-313-6771 if you would like more information. There are also Needle Exchange Sites available in East and West County. This one-for-one syringe exchange programs allows injection drug users to receive clean syringes, condoms, and harm reduction information. Times and locations are: Mondays, 6-8 p.m. in Richmond (500 "B" St. between Barrett & Richmond Parkway), Tuesdays, 6 - 8 p.m. in Bay Point (Pittsburg Baptist Church, 2586 Willow Pass Road-parking lot), Wednesdays, 6 - 8 p.m. in North Richmond (1090 Factory Street, North Richmond-cross street is 7th street), Thursdays, 6 - 8 p.m. in Pittsburg (355 Central Avenue-cross street is Solari Street) Needle Exchange Update Report to Family & Human Services Committee (102k PDF, 7p.)
