About Childhood Injury Prevention Coalition (CIPC)

CIPC's mission is to advance injury prevention through education and policy for the health, safety and welfare of children and adolescents.

Injury is the largest public health problem for young people, ages 0-19, claiming more lives than all childhood diseases combined. It is a widely believed among professionals in the medical and public health fields that most injury deaths and disabilities can be prevented through environmental and policy change and public health intervention.

Recognizing this, the Childhood Injury Prevention Coalition was established in 1987 as a multi-disciplinary coalition working to reduce childhood injuries in Contra Costa County. More than 20 public and private agencies are members and work together to analyze the causes of injuries, promote education and outreach on children's risks for injuries, coordinate injury prevention programs, and advocate for organizational and policy changes to improve childhood safety. The Spectrum of Prevention, a framework for developing prevention strategies, is used to guide CIPC's activities. CIPC is recognized as a leader in childhood injury prevention and was distinguished as one of top ten Safe Communities by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The work of CIPC is carried out through subcommittees that deal with a specific injury problem as outlined in the three-year plan. Each subcommittee coordinates the activities of participating agencies and develops joint projects to address specific injury problems.
