Medical Waste Program FAQsAre Body Art Practitioners required to be registered with the Environmental Health Division?Yes. Tattoo Artists, Body Piercers, or Permanent Cosmetic Technicians are required to register with Contra Costa Environmental Health. Forms can be downloaded (99k PDF, 1p.), requested by e-mail, or obtained by calling 925-692-2500. Are regulations in place for Body Art practitioners?Standards are currently being developed which will govern certain aspects of the construction and sanitation practices for Body Art Establishments. Contact Environmental Health at 925-692-2500 and request to speak with the Body Art Program Specialist for more specific information. Can I get a tattoo if I am under 18?No. Under provisions of the penal code, a minor is not allowed to receive a tattoo even if their guardian is willing to provide consent. The only exception allowed is if there is a medical reason and a physician has authorized it. Can I get a body piercing if I am under 18?A minor is allowed to receive certain body piercings if their guardian who resides with them provides consent.
