The Public and Environmental Health Advisory Board (PEHAB) is a 19-member community board appointed by the Board of Supervisors in 1986. PEHAB's role is to advise Contra Costa Health Services on community health concerns and recommend strategies to address them. It is a direct link between the community and the Health Department, helping to guide the Department in providing services that meet critical needs in the community.

Specifically, PEHAB's mission is to:

  • Anticipate emerging health concerns to initiate prevention programs.
  • Focus public health interventions in communities with the most limited resources or least access to resources.
  • Balance available resources with growing needs.
  • Advocate for increased action to improve community health.

PEHAB's current priorities are health care access to services and environmental health.

  • Wrote and distributed the Medi-Cal Managed Care Briefing Paper to educate community leaders and policy makers about the transition of Medi-Cal clients to managed care.
  • Wrote and distributed Pesticides in Contra Costa County (2MB PDF, 24pp.)
  • Wrote and distributed Consumption of Contaminated Fish (500k PDF, 14pp.)
  • Successfully encouraged the local Board of Supervisors to pass an Integrated Pest Management Policy for Contra Costa County.
  • Developed a comprehensive plan to reduce risk factors associated with chronic disease among populations at highest risk for disease in Contra Costa.

Those interested in becoming members of the Public and Environmental Health Advisory Board must submit an Application Form (PDF, 2pp.). A detailed membership packet is available from Public Health Administration (925-313-6712).
