Partnership for the Public's Health
About the ProjectThe Partnership for the Public's Health was a four-year initiative to improve the ability of local health departments to work effectively with communities to improve health. Contra Costa Health Services was one of fourteen health departments that received funding from The California Endowment (TCE) to partner with separately funded community groups.
Three collaboratives were established:
Each collaborative created its own shared vision, goals and work plans. PHOEC created and tested a Town Hall meeting approach in both Bay Point and West County that helped residents to plan, prepare for and engage in effective dialogue with policy makers to voice their concerns and advocate for specific recommendations for improvements. While TCE funding has ended, all three partnership continue. The Community Health Initiative has focused on environmental justice and air pollution, asthma prevention and advocacy to reduce diesel emissions, and on Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL). The Monument Community Partnership is tackling economic development, increasing transportation to improve access to services and diabetes prevention within the Latino community, among others. The Bay Point Partnership is supporting environmental justice efforts, youth leadership development and cross-cultural training to improve delivery of services, as well as having established a Promotora Program.
