Curriculum

Each rotation is 4 weeks long. All calls intern year are overnight calls.

First Year

Rotation: Educational focus: Calls:
Adult Medicine: 2 rotations General Internal Medicine including ICU patients 4 calls per rotation
General Surgery: 2 rotations Care of pre-op, intra-op, and post-op surgical patients 4 calls per rotation
OB/Gyn: 2 rotations Management of all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology, both inpatient and outpatient. Q7; faculty in house during call
Pediatrics- East Bay Children's Hospital Care of hospitalized children (no newborns), at Children's Hospital, Oakland Q4
Pediatrics-Nursery Newborn stabilization, assessment, and management Q7
Outpatient Orthopedics Ambulatory focus including sports medicine, physical therapy, radiology 4 calls per rotation
Behavioral Medicine/Care of Dependent Adults (CODA) Outpatient, inpatient consult experiences; addiction medicine; outpatient care with geriatric, disabled, and hospice patients 2 calls per rotation
Clinics Ambulatory focus including dermatology, GI, ENT, urology, minor procedures, ophthalmology 2 calls per rotation
Emergency Medicine-Anesthesia Intubation under supervision; assessment and management of urgent and emergent medical problems. No call
Community Medicine:2 weeks Ambulatory experiences focused on a community and a specific health concern No call
Night Admits:2 weeks Doing night admissions for medicine and surgical patients (except no ICU patients) No call

Second Year

Rotation: Educational focus: Calls:
Adult Medicine: 3 rotations General Internal Medicine including ICU patients 1 overnight call3 short calls
General Surgery Care of pre-op, intra-op, and post-op surgical patients 1 overnight call3 short calls
OB/Gyn Management of all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology both inpatient and outpatient. Twice a week; faculty in house during call
ICU Medicine Manage ICU and step-down unit from 4 - 10 p.m weekdays only with 1 hour ICU lecture daily. Q7 ICU call 4 p.m. - 8 a.m.
Gyn/Peds General and specialty peds clinics; gyn clinics with procedural emphasis Q7 Every Friday night OB call
Behavioral Medicine/CODA Outpatient, inpatient consult experiences; addiction medicine; outpatient care with geriatric, disabled, and hospice patients 1 weekend dayfloat 2 callbacks
Clinics Ambulatory focus including dermatology, sports medicine, HIV, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, GI 1 weekend dayfloat 2 callbacks
Outpatient Pediatrics Outpatient experience including specialty and general pediatrics 4 callbacks per rotation
Elective Program director-approved educational experience. Still attend continuity clinics 4 callbacks per rotation
Emergency Medicine Assessment and management of urgent and emergent medical problems. No call
Night float 2 weeks Night "house" officer including ICU but excluding OB No call
Jeopardy:2 weeks Backup coverage for other residents in case of illness or personal reasons No call

Third Year

Rotation: Educational focus: Calls:
Adult Medicine: 2 rotations General Internal Medicine including ICU patients 4 short calls
General Surgery Care of pre-op, intra-op, and post-op surgical patients 4 short calls
OB/Gyn:2 rotations Management of all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology both inpatient and outpatient. Q7; faculty in house during call
Clinics Ambulatory focus including Cardiology/Treadmills, Pulmonary, Nephrology, Rheumatology 1 weekend dayfloat 2 callbacks
Outpatient Medicine Ambulatory focus including renal, heme-onc and rheumatology 1 weekend dayfloat 2 callbacks
Emergency Medicine Assessment and management of urgent and emergent medical problems. No call
Pediatrics Ambulatory primary care, emergency room and subspecialty pediatric experiences No call
Night Admits:2 weeks Night resident doing admissions for medicine and surgical patients (no ICU) No call
Night float: 2 weeks Night "house" officer including ICU but excluding OB No call
Jeopardy:2 weeks Backup coverage for other residents in case of illness or personal reasons No call
Elective: 2½ rotations Program director-approved educational experience. Away experiences, including overseas, are an option. No call
