Health Alert For High Heat Periods

What:

Advice for avoiding heat-related illness.

The plan focuses on the needs of unserved and underserved youth and adults with serious mental illness who are homeless, seriously disabled older adults over 60 who don't have adequate care, and children with serious emotional disorders and their families.

Who:

Contra Costa Health Services is warning residents to avoid heat-related illness. Children, the elderly and people with chronic health issues are especially at risk.

Why:

Hot weather is expected to last through Friday with temperatures possibly reaching 100 degrees in some areas of Contra Costa County, according to the National Weather Service.

How:

Curtail outdoor activity.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Friends, relatives and neighbor should check on people who may be at risk. A break in a cool environment can help.
Avoid hot cars. After 20 minutes, the temperature inside a car can be 150 degrees.
Dress babies appropriately for hot weather in lightweight clothing (a diaper and T-shirt).
Watch for symptoms of heat-related illnesses: confusion, fatigue, impaired judgment, weakness, flushing, chills, hyperventilation, dizziness and, in severe cases, collapse, loss of consciousness or seizures.
Call your health provider if symptoms appear.
