California Department of Public Health Launches Preteen Vaccine Week (California Department of Public Health)

Preteens (11-12 year olds) are growing up quickly and will soon become young adults. Scheduling a preteen visit with their health care provider is an excellent opportunity for providers and parents to discuss the challenges of adolescence, including standing up to peer-pressure, body image, eating right, and staying active and safe.

A visit with their health care provider is also the perfect time for preteens to get caught-up on vaccines that are now recommended for 11- and 12-year olds such as:

  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • Tdap, the tetanus-diphtheria booster that now also protects against whooping cough
  • Chickenpox booster, for those who have not had chickenpox disease
  • HPV (human papillomavirus), a 3-shot series recommended for girls to prevent cervical cancer in adulthood
