Internship Opportunities

Contra Costa Mental Health provides an array of integrated mental health programs and services for children, adolescents, young adults, adults and older adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Residents of Contra Costa County served by the mental health division belong to different cultural/ethnic backgrounds as well as socioeconomic strata. The programs and services provided by the division are offered through a system of care that includes mental health staff, community based organizations, and a network of private providers.

Intern and Trainee placement opportunities are available in the adult, older adult and children's programs serving a geographical area within the county. Opportunities are also available with the forensic and detention mental health units at the Martinez Detention Facility and inpatient and crisis units at the Contra Costa Regional Medical center. Other placements at programs serving adults are currently under development and may be available in the near future. Contra Costa Mental Health is also planning to expand the Intern Program to include Nursing students. Please check this website in the future for these new opportunities. Each placement site that is currently available is described in detail in this information packet. Students accepted to the program may be eligible to be hired as Student Workers and receive an hourly pay. Students with bilingual skills may receive an additional incentive if they qualify.

Training

Contra Costa Mental Health intern and trainee program is geared towards preparing clinicians to practice in the public mental health system. We enroll and train approximately 30-40 doctoral and masters-level interns and trainees each year. We provide one didactic seminar each month on specialized mental health topics. In-service trainings focused on specific populations served at each site are available on a regular basis. Further, the county offers all-staff trainings in different mental health training areas that students can attend. Along with clinical skills training, we incorporate diversity and cultural competency trainings in our curriculum.

How to apply

Please check the following listings for detailed information about the available placement sites and the application procedure. Contact the Intern Coordinators at each site directly for questions related to that placement site. At this time all placements for September 2009 to June 2010 are filled. We will be accepting applications for placements from September 2010 to June 2011 starting in January 2010. Note: We accept interns/trainees from many graduate programs in the Bay Area. It is the student's responsibility to make sure that the clinical placement in Contra Costa Mental Health meets the requirements of the academic program.
