The Refugee Health Screening

This is a clinical service offered to new refugees entering Contra Costa County. All refugees (like immigrants) receive an oversea medical examination before resettlement in the United States The purpose of this overseas examination is to identify those with medical conditions. These include HIV, infectious tuberculosis, syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases, Hansen's disease/leprosy, mental disorder and drug addiction The overseas medical examination is valid for one year prior to a refugee's departure to the U.S.; therefore, the possibility exists that a refugee can develop a disease (TB, syphilis, HIV for example) after he/she receives clearance but before his/her departure.

Key Benefits

  • Follow-up of conditions identified during the overseas medical exam.
  • Evaluation and diagnostic services to determine current health status and identify health problems.
  • Referral for follow-up of health problems identified.
  • Basic health education.
  • Linkage with primary health care services.

The domestic health assessment, the service we provide, differs significantly from the examination provided overseas, both in terms of purpose and scope. The domestic assessment is designed to eliminate health-related barriers to successful resettlement while protecting the health of the U.S. population. During the clinic appointment, our medical providers will focus on tuberculosis; hepatitis B; immunizations; parasitic infections; anemia; vision; hearing and dental abnormalities; hypertension, breast cancer, and diabetes.
