TeenAge Program

Our Vision: A community where all young people have equal opportunity to fulfill their capacity for greatness.

TAP works in partnership with youth and their allies to use their voices, realize their power and influence change to create a safe and healthy community.

TAP achieves this by providing health education and training, facilitating youth development and mentorship programs, increasing youth access to health services, and building partnerships with other youth service providers.

TAP has been serving Contra Costa youth for over 30 years.

What Services Does TAP Provide?

Education

Teen specific health education activities are conducted in Contra Costa County high schools, juvenile detention facilities, and community organizations. Activities include:

  • Curriculum Development
  • Classroom Presentations
  • Lunch-Time Displays
  • Teacher Trainings

Clinical Services/Health Access

School Based Health Center - TAP partners with Clinical Services to provide school-based health services at Richmond High School and Kennedy High School. The health services offer sports physicals, wellness exams, immunizations, vision & hearing screening, HIV testing, reproductive health services, and referrals to community agencies. All services are free or low-cost.

In addition, TAP and Clinical Services are currently working with other county and community partners to roll out mobile school based services through out the county, over the coming year.

Navigator Program - TAP staff work in selected high schools to help students access health services at local clinics. Students can schedule appointments to meet with TAP staff during school hours, where they are given prevention information, advice on the types of clinic services available and their insurance options. TAP staff will assist students with scheduling appointments and will even meet them at their appointment if requested.

Condom Availability Program - In conjunction with the West Contra Costa Unified School District, TAP's Condom Availability Program provides education and free condoms to students enrolled in West Contra Costa County high schools.

Youth Development

Empowerment Through Action
  • Middle College High School: Students utilize community-organizing skills to critically examine and address issues impacting their community.
  • Mount Diablo High School and Richmond High School: Students utilize community organizing skills to reflect and take action on issues related to exercise and nutrition for youth in the community.

Mentoring Projects

TAP mentoring projects are designed to build relationships between students and health professionals. Projects provide opportunities for students to explore health career options, job-shadow health professionals, and gain valuable work experience. Projects include:

  • Teen Health Council - Students at Mt. Diablo High participate in a 6-week job-shadowing program and participate in a semester-long peer education course taught by TAP staff.

Who Is Eligible for TAP Services?

TAP projects and services are available to all youth, ages 12 to 21, in Contra Costa County.

Community Partnership

Adolescent Health Alliance (AHA)

TAP coordinates the Adolescent Health Alliance (AHA), a community based project to provide training opportunities to build the capacity of adolescent health providers throughout the county.

TAP works with school districts to ensure proper implementation of HIV and Comprehensive Sexuality Education (SB 71) by providing administrative technical assistance, and trainings and curricula for teachers.
