Salmonella Update

There is an ongoing investigation of a multi-state outbreak of salmonella that appears to be linked with the consumption of certain types of tomatoes.

Contra Costa Health Services recently investigated a single case of Salmonella Saintpaul in a woman living in Contra Costa. It has been determined that her exposure to salmonella most likely occurred while she was visiting Illinois. No other cases of salmonella infection have been linked to eating tomatoes grown in California.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever and occasionally vomiting. For complete information on salmonella see the Salmonella Infection Fact Sheet (PDF, 1p.)

Contra Costa is not making any recommendations on types of tomatoes to eat or avoid.

All fresh produce including tomatoes should be washed thoroughly under running water before eating it.

Information is also available on the Health Emergency Information Line 1-888-959-9911.
