On June 21, 2022, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors adopted a revised EMS & Ambulance Ordinance replacing an Ambulance Ordinance that was last updated in 1983.  The revised ordinance expanded the Contra Costa County Emergency Medical Services Agency's jurisdiction over ambulance operations, special events, and medical standby services.  It also incorporated the requirements of AB 389 relating to competitive bids by fire districts for ambulance service.  Under the authority of the ordinance, the Agency regulates all ambulance services in unincorporated Contra Costa County and in those cities that have adopted the ordinance.

Contra Costa County does not regulate gurney/wheelchair van or medical transportation services.  Those interested in providing these services should contact the cities where they intend to operate for any local requirements and with the appropriate state agency for any state requirements.
