Class of 2028

Andrade, Tricia, MD (she/her)
Keck School of Medicine of USC

I was born and raised in a diverse neighborhood in Chicago by a hardworking and loving family of Mexican immigrants and later moved to Los Angeles for medical school. Witnessing the unique challenges faced by people in my community when seeking medical care motivated me to pursue a career in medicine and ultimately choose Contra Costa for residency. I was drawn to Contra Costa’s full spectrum training, commitment to health equity, and strong inpatient and reproductive health curriculum, all of which will prepare me to provide a wide range of care to immigrant and underserved communities.

Brustad, Abby, MD (she/her)
University of Minnesota School of Medicine

After growing up in a large family in Minnesota, I moved to the East Coast to study child development and public health before returning to my home state for medical school. My passion for obstetrics and reproductive health, healthcare advocacy, and community medicine drew me to Contra Costa, but my decision was solidified after meeting the awesome group of residents and faculty! Outside of medicine, you can find me playing ice hockey, hiking in state and national parks, reading thrillers, and enjoying live music.

Dorothy Han, MD

Han, Dorothy, MD, MPH (she/her)
Keck School of Medicine of USC

I am a Bay Area native and daughter of Taiwanese immigrants who is thrilled to be coming home to serve the community that inspired me to pursue medicine. I chose Contra Costa because of the exceptional full-spectrum training and the people who share my commitment to improving the health of the community through compassionate, person-first care and advocacy In my free time, you can find me at the community garden tending to plants in the kitchen, cooking with my partner or reading at my local park.

Jeon, Sals, MD (they/them)
University of Minnesota School of Medicine

I am the first-born daughter of South Korean immigrants, born in Contra Costa County, and a journeyer of winding paths as a healer and weaver who finds medicine in relationships, rest, movement, creative arts, food, and nature (especially mountains and water). The Bay is a second home - a place that largely shaped my political identity and still holds chosen family. I am honored to train at CCRMC alongside folx with shared values in health equity and justice. I look forward to this chapter that prepares us to provide comprehensive full-spectrum care, to truly meet people where they are at, and to explore sustainable strategies in collective healing!

Leonard, Sophia, MD, MPH (she/her)
University of Kansas School of Medicine

Growing up in Kansas, I saw how essential family medicine physicians are in caring for underserved communities—and how critical broad-spectrum training is to meet the diverse needs of differently resourced populations. During my fourth year of medical school, I chose to do an away rotation at Contra Costa because of the program's commitment to working with the underserved patient population I intend to serve in my future practice, as well as its robust, full-scope training. I chose to return for residency after finding a community of mission-driven faculty and residents who foster a supportive and safe learning environment.

Ma, Jessica, MD (she/her)
University of California San Francisco School of Medicine

I was born and raised in Georgia, moved to the Bay Area for medical school, and am overjoyed to be staying here for residency. I chose Contra Costa for its robust full-spectrum training and commitment to underserved populations, and to continue building my community in the beautiful East Bay. When I'm not at work, you can find me at the pottery wheel, at the climbing gym, or at home playing with my two cats, Momo and Pepper.

Malhi, Ash, MD (he/him)
University of Washington School of Medicine

I spent my early childhood in India before immigrating to the Seattle area and have lived there until moving here for residency. I chose Contra Costa for its full-spectrum, community-focused training, mission to improving care for underserved populations, and close-knit community. My clinical interests include HIV Medicine, LGBTQ+ Health including gender-affirming care, Addiction Medicine with a focus on harm reduction, Reproductive Health/Justice, and Women's Health.

Marino-Nunez, Diana, MD (she/her)
Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago

I was born and raised in Arequipa, Peru, before my family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan (Go Blue!). Before medical school, I worked in health literacy and medication management research at Federally Qualified Health Centers in Chicago. I was drawn to Contra Costa because of its people and their commitment to serve a diverse patient population through a robust full-scope training. I'm particularly interested in providing trauma-responsive reproductive care as well as improving access to healthcare for non-English language speakers.

Modi, Krupa, MD (she/her)
Keck School of Medicine of USC

I grew up in California's San Joaquin Valley and moved to the East Bay to study public health at UC Berkeley. Over my four years there, I worked with people experiencing homelessness at a student-run clinic, which inspired me to become a physician working at the intersection of medicine, public health, and social justice. I chose CCRMC because of its broad training in areas I am passionate about (including street medicine and immigrant and refugee health), commitment to caring for vulnerable communities, and emphasis on providing a challenging but nurturing learning environment.

Murtagh, Caroline, MD (she/her)
Stanford University School of Medicine

I grew up in Massachusetts but have made the Bay Area my home the past four years of medical school. Prior to medicine, I worked in global health and community health in Uganda, Liberia, and rural Florida, where I met communities that instilled in me the importance of compassion, humility, and resilience in advancing equitable healthcare. I chose Contra Costa because of its rigorous full- spectrum training in primary care and its commitment to health equity.

Ott, Austen, MD (they/them)
University of Minnesota School of Medicine

Raised on a farm in Indiana, I found my way to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for medical school where I completed a nine-month longitudinal clerkship in rural medicine. I chose Contra Costa for the unparalleled full-spectrum training, including obstetrics, reproductive health, acute care management, and procedural opportunities. I am honored to be part of the community-centered and advocacy-oriented environment that is fostered by the people of CCRMC.

Santaolaya, Carlos, MD, MSc (he/him)
University of Queensland Medical School

I grew up in Anaheim, CA, and went to UC Santa Cruz before curiosity took me abroad. I studied epidemiology in Antwerp, Belgium, before realizing I missed working closely with patients, which led me to medical school across two continents in Brisbane, Australia and New Orleans, Louisiana. Along the way, I’ve taken well-needed detours to over 30 countries, where I’ve explored cultures through cooking, tested my limits in the mud and mountains, and built meaningful friendships. The same spirit of curiosity and community is what drew me to CCRMC, where I can train in full-spectrum care and grow into the kind of physician who shows up wherever they’re needed most.

Vu, Jackie, MD (she/her)
UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and enjoy martial arts, going to the beach, experimenting in the kitchen, and riding motorcycles. I worked as a biomedical engineer before finding my way to medicine, and my experiences as the child of low-income Vietnamese refugees have fueled my passion for serving marginalized populations. Contra Costa was my dream program because it not only shares my core values but also provides the ideal environment to further cultivate my interests in street medicine, reproductive rights, global health, and innovation in resource-limited settings.
