Addiction Medicine Track

The Addiction Medicine Track provides a structured, longitudinal curriculum of didactic learning, clinical experiences, and professional development preparing interested residents to provide evidence-based care for patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

 At the end of their first year, R1s can apply to this track. One or two interested residents are accepted.

 Components of the track include:

• Professional development and scholarship:

  • Participation in the Medical Education and Research Foundation for the Treatment of Addiction (MERF) Scholarship program as an R2 or R3

  • Attendance at the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Annual Conference (the resident will be responsible for cost but can use their educational allowance benefit).

  • Quarterly addiction-focused journal clubs

  • Designing and implementing a project at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (CCRMC) related to improving addiction medicine care, workflows or residency education

  • Didactic presentations (twice in R2 and R3 years each)

  • Journal club presentation

• Clinical rotations in:

  • Addiction Medicine

  • Infectious Disease

  • Healthcare for the Homeless

  • Away at a dedicated addiction medicine site

• Longitudinal experiences:

  • Working with an addiction medicine mentor

  • Option to work in a CCRMC Quality Improvement or Population Health initiative relating to SUD

  • Integration of addiction medicine principles in continuity clinic
