Program Description
The Consultation and Assessment Team (CAT) is a Contra Costa County clinic that conducts psychological evaluations for families involved with Children and Family Services (formerly Child Protective Services) and for county specialty mental health (SMH) clinics serving children. The population is culturally and ethnically diverse. Children served by the SMH clinics generally have moderate to severe mental health needs. Regarding the CFS referrals, in almost all cases a child has been removed from the home due to severe neglect and/or abuse and is residing in either foster care or a group home. Evaluations may be conducted on either a parent or child. Children may have been recently removed or may have been in a foster or group home for some time. Regardless of the referral stream, assessment questions may include diagnostic clarification, treatment planning and placement recommendations. Referral questions for parents include risk assessment, identification of underlying mental health issues, identifying treatment interventions to ensure safe reunification planning. Detailed, comprehensive written reports and feedback letters are provided to the referring party (which may be CFS, Dependency Court, therapist, or family depending on the referral).
CAT practicum students can expect to conduct 4-6 comprehensive psychological test batteries/reports (depending on student’s efficiency and number of referrals) and have 1-2 individual clients during the year. A student is expected to complete a CAT assessment in 3 months. Practicum students also conduct intake clinical assessments, participate in case consultation with staff and collateral contact with community agencies, and complete appropriate record-keeping/progress notes. There is a minimum of 4-5 hours of supervision and training-related meetings each week: 1-1.5 hours individual supervision, 1 hour Case Conference, 1 hour Didactic Seminar, 1 hour Special Topics seminar, and 1-1.5 weekly hour Group Supervision for Assessment.
