Every year, approximately 70% of new HIV infections in Contra Costa County are among men who have sex with men. Studies have shown that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken daily.

Every year, approximately 10-13% of new HIV infections in Contra Costa County are among individuals who identify as women. Of these women, the vast majority are Black and Latinx. PrEP is a safe and effective way for all women at risk of getting HIV to take control of their sexual health. PrEP also has the potential to greatly reduce the burden of HIV among women of color in our community.

PrEP, a once-a-day pill (Truvada), has been proven to lower the risk of getting HIV among people who share needles to inject drugs by more than 74%.
