Test strips can detect if your drugs contain fentanyl, but not the amount or how strong it is. When used correctly with other risk reduction strategies, fentanyl test strips (FTS) can help prevent overdoses.
Where to get FTS
Contra Costa Health offers free FTS. Call (925) 608-5350 for more information.
FTS can be also purchased in larger quantities from several vendors:
Do not use drugs alone. Call Never Use Alone at 877-696-1996
Never Use Alone is a hotline for overdose prevention and support. Their peer operators are available 24/7. An operator stays on the line and will notify emergency services if the person stops responding after using drugs.
Recognize Opioid Overdose
An opioid overdose happens when someone takes too much of an opioid drug, like fentanyl or painkillers. Recognizing the signs of opioid overdose and acting fast can save a life.
Possible signs of an overdose
Loss of consciousness
Body is very limp
Vomiting or making gurgling noises
Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils” that don’t react to light
Face is pale or clammy
Breathing is slow, shallow, or has stopped
Fingernails or lips have a purple or blue color
What to do
Call 911 immediately
Administer naloxone, if available
Provide rescue breath if the person can’t breathe on their own
Lay them on their side to prevent choking
Stay with the person until emergency assistance arrives
California’s Good Samaritan law protects people giving emergency medical care, including giving naloxone.
